Known issues with Panopto, along with workarounds

Body

Panopto Not Applying Changes to Video

When adding captions or Smart Chapters to a Panopto video, in some cases, the edits are not processed in the final video, even after selecting Apply. This is often a result of having multiple streams/clips spliced together in one video. Captions need to be added to each individual clip, so even when adding captions to the entire video, they will not display.

As a workaround, you can download the video, which compresses all the clips into one video, then re-upload it into the destination folder, and re-add the edits.

  1. Select the Settings under the video that is not processing edits

    Settings (gear icon) highlighted

  2. In the left menu, select Outputs

    Outputs tab highlighted

  3. Scroll down to Video Podcast. Under the video preview, use the Type and Quality drop-downs to customize how you want your video to appear when it is downloaded. Once you have selected your changes, select Apply. Your video will process for a few minutes, then be available to download to your device

Type option drop-down list, with an arrow pointing to the “Apply” button

  4. Re-upload your video to the destination folder
  5. Once it is fully published and processed, re-add captions and other edits
  6. Select Apply when done
  7. The edits can be viewed after they are fully processed.

"Panopto 84" Error on Panopto for Mac

This is a permissions issue, which results from the user selecting the local recording directory to either Desktop, Downloads or Documents. The Panopto server cannot upload from those locations, as those directories are owned by Apple's iCloud process. Users should always record to Panopto’s recommended file path, which looks like this: "/Users/[insertUsernameHere]/Movies/Panopto Recordings."

Here is how to fix that issue:

  1. Open Panopto for Mac
  2. Click Panopto at the top of the menu bar next to the Apple logo
  3. Click Preferences
  4. Now click the Browse button next to the Local Recording Folder and navigate to the Movies/Panopto Recordings Folder
  5. Click OK to save the changes
  6. Close and reopen Panopto and try a new recording. Recordings should now upload without any further issues
