Chat within a Zoom Meeting

Summary

You can use chat in a Zoom meeting to send messages to the whole meeting, or to select users. Hosts can control participants chat permissions.

Body

Chat can be used for participants to type and message within a meeting. To access Chat control, in the bottom menu, select Chat:

This will open a panel on the right of your Zoom window, where you can type into a textbox.

Using Chat

To send a chat message, type your message into the box at the bottom of the Chat panel. You can also Format your chat message with bold, italics, and other options (1), send a File (2), and Add Emojis to your chat message (3).

By default, a chat message will be sent to everyone in the meeting. You can send a message to a specific person by changing Everyone to the person you want to message. A Direct Message flag will appear when an individual is selected.

Messages can be replied to in a thread by selecting Thread below the message.

Messages can also be reacted to using Reactions below a message.

Additional options can be found in the menu. Hosts and co-hosts can delete messages.

Options for Host and Co-hosts

If you have a Host or Co-host role, you can control who your Participants can chat with:

  • No One: Disables chat for all participants
  • Host and co-hosts: Participants can only send messages to the host and co-hosts
  • Everyone: Allows participants to post messages for everyone, but cannot direct message other participants
  • Everyone and anyone directly: Same as everyone, but allows participants to send a direct message to any other participant

You can save the chat to your device. It will download as a .txt file, and in the Chat panel, Zoom will indicate where you can access it on your device after downloading.
