How to Install and Activate IBM SPSS Statistics 31

Summary

This guide provides instructions for IT personnel to install and activate IBM SPSS Statistics 31 on Windows and macOS devices using network or site key licensing.

IBM SPSS Statistics is a powerful software suite used for editing, managing, and analyzing complex quantitative data. It is popularly used for teaching and research.

License Details

  • Academic and administrative use
  • Network and site licenses
    • Site licenses require approval from IT Software Management
  • All university-barcoded devices are covered
    • Home-use license option available for UNLV faculty and staff who have IBM SPSS installed on a university-barcoded device assigned to them

Installation Requirements

  • Device must be running Windows OS 64bit or at least macOS 10.15
  • Uninstall previous versions of IBM SPSS from the device

Install SPSS 31

Locate Media Installer

All media installers are located in the X: Drive CS_DFS Software Repository. You will need to disconnect and map your X Drive to the device before installing.

The media for SPSS 31 are located in (unless otherwise indicated):

  • X: Drive = Software Repository > CS_DFS > SPSS > SPSS Statistics > SPSS 31
  • Google Drive = Shared Drives > UNLV IT Software Management > Software Repositories > CS_DFS Software Repository > SPSS > SPSS 31

Install SPSS 31 for macOS

  1. From the SPSS 31.0.0 folder, select Mac.
  2. Launch the installer SPSS31_Mac.pkg.
  3. Once the installer screen appears, select Continue.

  4. At the Read Me screen, select Continue.

  5. At the License screen, select Continue.

  6. Click Agree to accept the license agreement.

  7. (Optional) If the Destination Select screen appears, select the primary Macintosh HD and click Continue.
  8. At the next screen, select Install.

  9. If you are asked to log in to move forward with the installation, enter your username and password for the Mac computer.
  10. Click Install Software.

  11. Once the installation is complete, select Close.

Install SPSS 31 for Windows

  1. From the SPSS 31.0.0 folder, select Windows.
  2. Launch the installer SPSSStatistics.exe.
  3. Once the installer screen appears, select Next.

  4. (Optional) If a warning screen appears, select Next.

  5. At the License Agreement screen, select I accept the terms in the license agreement.
  6. Select Next.

  7. At the Destination Folder screen, select Next.

  8. At the Ready to Install the Program screen, select Install.

  9. Once the installation is complete, make sure Start IBM SPSS Statistics now is checked.
  10. Select Finish.

  11. (Optional) If prompted to restart, close all apps you have open and restart the computer.
  12. Once SPSS 31 launches, follow the network or site activation guide at the end of this article to activate SPSS.

Post Installation

Please disconnect your X Drive and permanently delete any SPSS installer files from the local device, then restart the computer.

Activate SPSS 31

Activation Requirements

  • Active internet connection
  • Network license = Connected to UNLV network via direct ethernet, eduroam, or UNLV VPN
    • Please consider using the network license for UNLV barcoded computers
  • Site license = Requires an internet connection during activation
    • The site license is recommended for the following:
      • UNLV travel laptops
      • Remote users with university-barcoded devices who are unable to connect to or have slow UNLV VPN connections

Network Activation (Preferred)

  1. Launch SPSS 31 (aka IBM SPSS Statistics).
  2. (Optional) If it asks for a confirmation to run the program, select Yes.
  3. Once the Activate IBM SPSS Statistics screen appears, select Launch License Wizard.

  4. Once the Product Authorization screen appears, select Concurrent user license.
  5. Select Next.

  6. At the License Manager screen, enter this license server address: lic1.oit.unlv.edu
  7. Select Next.

  8. Once the Licensing Completed screen appears, verify the expiration date is in the future.
  9. Select Finish.

Site Key Activation

  1. Launch SPSS 31 (aka IBM SPSS Statistics).
  2. (Optional) If it asks for a confirmation to run the program, select Yes.
  3. Once the Activate IBM SPSS Statistics screen appears, select Launch License Wizard.

  4. (Optional) If the License Status screen appears, select Next.
  5. At the Product Authorization screen, select Authorized user license.
  6. Select Next.

  7. At the Enter Codes screen, enter the SPSS Site License code. You can determine the code via the SPSS excel sheet on Google Drive. If you are unsure, please assign the request to Software Management to verify.
  8. Select Add.

  9. Verify the key appears in the main box.
  10. Select Next.

  11. At the Internet Authorization Status screen, verify that the authorization was successful.
  12. Select Next.

  13. At the Licensing Completed screen, verify the expiration date is in the future.
  14. Select Finish.

  15. (Optional) If the Restart IBM SPSS Statistics screen appears, select Restart.

Recording

All IBM SPSS installations must be recorded in one of the following record locations: Manual Records (IT Software Management), UNLV Self Service (JAMF), and/or UNLV Software Center (MECM).

  1. Once an installation is completed, please collect and/or verify the following information:
    • Device Barcode (UNLV PID)
    • Platform (Windows or macOS)
    • Office Location or Home
  2. Notify Software Management of the install:
    • UNLV IT Technicians = Assign request to Software Management group in TDX
    • Other Technicians = Notify Software Management per your internal documentation
