How-to Create A Slack Developer Sandbox

Body

A Slack developer sandbox is a free, isolated Enterprise Grid environment for safely building and testing Slack apps and workflows without affecting UNLV's production Slack environment. Sandboxes are available to anyone enrolled in the Slack Developer Program.

Note: Because UNLV uses Slack Enterprise Grid, creating a sandbox is subject to approval by a Grid Admin. Depending on your organization’s settings, your request may require review and approval before the sandbox is provisioned. If your request is not automatically approved, you will receive a Slackbot notification with next steps. Contact the IT Help Desk if you are unsure whether sandbox provisioning is enabled for your account.

Before You Begin

Before you create a sandbox, make sure you have the following:

  • A @unlv.edu email address for registration
  • A Slack account associated with UNLV’s Enterprise Grid organization
  • A clear purpose for the sandbox, such as testing a specific app or workflow
Important: Register for the Slack Developer Program using your @unlv.edu email address. If you register with a personal email address, the sandbox will not be connected to UNLV’s Enterprise Grid organization and will not have access to UNLV Slack features and policies.

Join the Slack Developer Program

Before you can provision a sandbox, you must enroll in the Slack Developer Program.

  1. Go to the Slack Developer Program, then select Join the Program.
  2. Complete the registration form and enter your @unlv.edu email address when prompted.
  3. Select Submit.
  4. Open the confirmation email sent to your @unlv.edu inbox, then select Activate Developer Account.
  5. Sign in using your @unlv.edu email address and the password you created during registration.
  6. Select I Agree to accept the Terms of Service.

When you finish, your developer Dashboard opens. You are now enrolled in the Slack Developer Program.

Provision a Sandbox

Request a Sandbox

From your developer Dashboard, select Sandboxes in the left navigation, then select Provision Sandbox.

Note: Sandbox creation is subject to approval by a Grid Admin. If approval is required, your request will be reviewed before the sandbox is provisioned.
  • If admin approval is required, a Reason field appears. Enter a brief description of what you plan to test.
  • Select Request Access. Your request is sent to the Org Admin for review.
  • If admin approval is not required, continue to the next step.

Configure the Sandbox

  1. Enter a name and details for your sandbox.
  2. Choose the type of sandbox you want:
    • Empty sandbox — starts with one workspace and one demo user
    • Template sandbox — starts with one workspace, seven system-created users, seven channels, and sample message threads and reactions
  3. Select Provision Sandbox to confirm.
  4. Select Manage Sandboxes on the confirmation screen.

Your sandbox appears on the Sandboxes page after it is created. Select its name to open it, then sign in with your @unlv.edu email address.

Note: Sandbox workspaces use passwordless sign-in with a magic code. Each time you sign in, a single-use PIN is sent to your @unlv.edu email address.

Sandbox Limits

Keep the following limits in mind when you plan your sandbox environment:

  • Up to two active sandboxes at any given time
  • Up to 10 sandboxes provisioned over any 30-day period
  • Up to three workspaces per sandbox
  • Up to eight users per sandbox, excluding bots and apps
  • Up to two guests per sandbox
  • Up to 20 app integrations or published workflows per workspace, or 60 maximum per sandbox
  • Sandboxes are active for six months by default and can be extended for another six months if you remain eligible

Manage Your Sandbox

Extend a Sandbox

You receive an email reminder 30 days before your sandbox is archived.

  1. Go to the Sandboxes page in your developer Dashboard.
  2. Select the three dots menu to the right of your sandbox in the Active Sandboxes section.
  3. Select Extend archive date.

Delete a Sandbox

Warning: Deleting a sandbox is permanent. All messages, files, workflows, and users are irretrievable. Export any data you need to keep before you continue.
  1. Go to the Sandboxes page in your developer Dashboard.
  2. Select the three dots menu to the right of your sandbox in the Active Sandboxes section.
  3. Select Delete, then follow the on-screen prompts to confirm.
