Captions are strongly recommended for all videos uploaded to the Panopto system to support accessibility for all users on campus. The easiest way to add captions is by generating ASR, or “automatic speech recognition,” captions. For videos with voiceover, Panopto will give you the option to add ASR with the click of a button. To add them:
- Select the Captions tab on the left-hand navigation
- Select the Import Captions drop-down > Important Automatic Captions. These will automatically appear as “blocks” associated with specific timestamps in your video

Editing Caption Blocks
Though ASR captions have a high level of accuracy, you must still read through them, and in some cases edit them, to ensure they are as correct as possible. To edit a caption block, just click on it. You can then modify any of the words as needed.

If you need to adjust the timestamp of a caption:
- Hover over the caption block, and select the three “more” dots
- Then, select Edit. From here, you can adjust the start and end time of when the caption text appears in the video manually

Manually Adding Caption Blocks
Sometimes, you may want to add a block to the video manually, perhaps to indicate an instrumental or something that the ASR captioning did not pick up.
To do this:
- Use the timeline to navigate to the spot in the video where you need the caption to appear
- Locate the Enter a Caption textbox in the Captions tab

- Type in your text, then hit the Enter key on your keyboard. This will automatically add the caption where you need it
