Claude is available to all UNLV students as part of the campus enterprise rollout. Used well, it can help you work more effectively, understand difficult material more deeply, and develop the kind of judgment about AI that employers and graduate programs are increasingly looking for. This Knowledge Base article will cover a few use cases for you to begin exploring Claude that you can expand on once you feel more comfortable using the tool and understanding the limitations and possibilities it holds.
Before using AI, keep in mind that AI use policies vary by course and instructor at UNLV. Always check your syllabus or ask your instructor what is permitted. Using Claude in ways that are not allowed in your course is an academic integrity issue, regardless of how the output is used.
Personalized Tutor
When a concept is not clicking, Claude can explain it a different way, with examples, analogies, or step-by-step breakdowns tailored to how you are thinking about it. Unlike a search result, Claude can respond to your specific confusion and adjust until the explanation lands.
Sample Prompt: "I am a UNLV student in a 100-level statistics course. I understand how to calculate a p-value but I do not understand what it actually means in practice. Can you explain it using a real-world example?"
Strengthen Your Writing Process
Use Claude as a thinking partner during the writing process...not to write your paper for you. Rather, have it help you develop your argument, identify gaps in your reasoning, or get feedback on a draft. Ask Claude to point out where your argument is unclear, suggest counterarguments you should address, or help you tighten a paragraph that is not working.
Sample Prompt: "Here is the introduction to my research paper on housing affordability in Las Vegas. What is unclear about my argument? What counterarguments should I address before my reader raises them?"
Prepare for Exams and Presentations
Ask Claude to quiz you on course material, generate practice problems, explain concepts from your notes, or help you build an outline for a presentation. Claude can adapt to your study style -- whether you prefer flashcard-style review, worked examples, or Socratic questioning that pushes your thinking.
Sample Prompt "I have an exam next week on the causes of the 2008 financial crisis. Quiz me on the key concepts using short-answer questions, then give me feedback on my answers."
If you use Claude to assist with academic work, be clear about how, with yourself and where required, with your instructor. Transparency about AI involvement is part of academic integrity, not separate from it.
