Accessing and Interacting with Panopto Content

Students can use this guide to learn how to open, play, and navigate within Panopto videos

Your instructor may use Panopto to record lectures, or publish other content for you to view. This guide shows you how to easily access and interact with these videos as a student.

Accessing Videos in Your Courses

  • Go to WebCampus, then select your course.
  • Your instructor may have your content available within modules, assingments, or pages, or in the Panopto Recordings page.
    • If content is in a module, assignment, or course page, go to that page. If the content is properly embedded, it should appear automatically.
    • If your instructor has directed you to open Panopto Recordings, in the left navigation, select Panopto Recordings.

Panopto Video Player Window

Depending on how your instructor records their content, you may see your instructor’s camera, PowerPoint slides, computer screen capture, and more.

In the Panopto Video Player window, you can search for a word, or phrase in the video by selecting and typing in Search This Recording.

The bottom toolbar enables you to navigate through the video, toggle closed captions, adjust speed, select what you want to view, and other options.

Viewing Contents and Captions

Panopto videos have many embedded features, which can make it easier to navigate, find important information, and even be more accessible. 

Contents

If your instructor has set up a table of contents for the video, you can use them to see where important topics were covered. 

From the Panopto video window, select Contents on the left menu.

Select any option in the contents. The video will advance to that portion of the timeline.

Captions

Select Captions on the left menu to read the video transcript. You can also click CC in the video player to view the captions directly within the Panopto video.

Taking Notes

You can make your own notes in any video that you watch. These notes will not be visible to any other viewer or instructor, and are helpful in keeping track of any thoughts you have that you want to record in specific instances throughout the video.

  1. From the Panopto video window, in the left menu, select Notes.
  2. Select a location in the video and type your note in Add a Note. Keep in mind that if you start typing a note, and the video continues to play, the time stamp of the note will reflect when you first started to type the note.

  3. Hover over the note and select the Menu next to the timestamp of the note to either edit the text/position of the note, or to delete the note.

Bookmarking

You can make your own bookmarks in any video that you watch. These bookmarks will not be visible to any other viewer or instructor, and are helpful for saving spots in a video you feel may be beneficial to revisit.

  1. From the Panopto video window, in the left menu, select Bookmarks.
  2. Select a location in the video and type your bookmark name in Add a Bookmark. Keep in mind that if you start typing a bookmark, and the video continues to play, the time stamp of the bookmark will reflect when you first started to type the bookmark.

  3. Hover over the bookmark and select Menu next to the timestamp of the bookmark to either edit the text/position of the note, or to delete the note.
