Claude for Researchers

 Claude can support the time-intensive, repetitive work that surrounds research, freeing you to focus on the intellectual contribution that only you can make. This Knowledge Base article focuses on three ways that researchers can begin using Claude for their process along with sample prompts to get them started on exploring the tool.

Maintain transparency about AI use in your research processes. Many journals and funding agencies now require disclosure of AI involvement. Check the requirements of your target venue before submission and document how Claude was used in your workflow.

Literature Review Scoping

Use Claude to help organize a large body of sources, identify themes across abstracts, draft synthesis paragraphs, or generate search strategies for databases you have not yet explored. Upload a set of PDFs and ask Claude to surface connections, flag contradictions, or suggest gaps in the existing literature.

Sample Prompt: "I am a UNLV researcher working on a systematic review of AI use in higher education advising. Here are 20 article abstracts. Can you identify the major themes, note any contradictions across studies, and suggest three areas where the literature appears thin?"

Grant Proposals

Use Claude to draft narrative sections, review your specific aims for clarity and persuasiveness, stress-test your methodology against likely reviewer questions, or adapt a successful proposal section for a new funding opportunity. Claude can also help you translate technical content for a broader review panel.

Sample Prompt: "Here is the specific aims page for my NSF proposal. What objections might a skeptical reviewer raise? How could I strengthen my response to each?"

Scholarly Writing Clarity

Ask Claude to review a draft manuscript section for clarity, logical flow, and concision, without changing your argument or voice. Claude can flag passages that are dense or unclear, suggest where transitions are missing, or help you restructure a paragraph that is not working

Sample Prompt: "Here is the methods section of a paper I am submitting to a peer-reviewed journal. Can you flag any passages that are unclear or where the logical sequence breaks down? Do not rewrite. Just identify the issues and explain what is confusing."
