Account & Access

I'm having trouble logging in. Who can I contact?

See Logging into Claude on Your Browser or Desktop App for step by step guidance, or contact the IT Help Desk if you're still stuck.

I already had a personal Claude account with my UNLV email before this rollout. What happens to it?

UNLV will claim it into the university's verified domain. You'll get an email and in-product notice with at least 30 days to choose: merge your existing data into your new UNLV account, or export what you want to keep and start fresh.

Can I keep a separate personal Claude account and my UNLV account at the same time?

No, not indefinitely. When UNLV migrates your personal account, you'll have 30 days to choose Merge and Join or Join Fresh. If you don't choose, your personal account is deactivated automatically and you're given a fresh UNLV account.

Do I have to use SSO?

Yes. Logging in with SSO (rather than the "Log in with email" magic link option) ensures your account is properly connected to UNLV's systems and that you have access to the correct features.

Can I use Claude on my phone or the desktop app?

Yes. Claude is available on web, desktop (Windows and macOS), mobile (iOS and Android), and the command line through Claude Code. See Getting Started with Claude at UNLV for download links and setup for each.

Paid Tiers & Usage

What's the difference between Claude Pro, Premium, and Max?

All three include the same products (Chat, Cowork, Code). They differ in cost and how much you can use. See the UNLV Claude Tier Guide for specifics.

Who is Claude Pro for, and do I need to do anything to get it?

Claude Pro is the default. Every active faculty member, staff member, and student already has access, no request needed. This provides similar usage amounts to a commercial paid Claude Pro account. See the UNLV Claude Tier Guide for specifics.

Who should request Premium or Max, and how?

Request Premium or Max if your work regularly exhausts Claude Pro's usage, for example sustained Claude Code sessions, high-volume document processing, or research that requires frequent, heavy use. To request a Claude upgraded account, please submit this Upgraded Claude Access request.

If I move to Premium or Max, do I lose my existing chats and projects?

Unfortunately, at this time, nothing transfers automatically between environments. Copy or save anything you want to keep before switching. Your previous environment stays available afterward, just at reduced usage, so you have time to retrieve anything you missed. For more information on using two Claude licenses concurrently, see Moving Your Claude Data at UNLV and Managing Multiple Licenses.

What happens when I hit my usage limit?

Claude will show a notice with your reset time. Usage limits reset automatically. If you're on Claude Pro and hitting limits regularly, that's the signal to request Premium or Max rather than waiting out resets repeatedly. To check your usage, go to your Claude account Settings > Usage.

Is API access included in any of these tiers?

No. API access (for building your own applications or integrations, for example through a research project) is a separate environment and billing model, and isn't included in Claude Pro, Premium, or Max.

How do I get API access?

UNLV is developing a request process for AI API access. Please check back for more details.

Data & Privacy

Is my data secure with Claude?

At the infrastructure level, Anthropic maintains ISO 27001:2022 (information security management), ISO/IEC 42001:2023 (AI management systems), and SOC 2 Type I and Type II certifications, all independently audited. UNLV has configured Claude  for our specific environment, including our settings, integrations, and data handling practices.

How will UNLV handle the data I submit to Claude?

Enterprise AI platforms licensed by UNLV, including ChatGPT, Claude, and their associated tools and integrations, are institutional technology resources governed by UNLV's Acceptable Use of Computing and Information Technology Resources Policy and Institutional Data Governance and Management Policy. As with other university-managed systems such as email and cloud storage, platform administrators may access usage data, activity logs, and conversation content for legitimate institutional purposes, including security, compliance, and policy enforcement. Users should treat these platforms accordingly.

Does UNLV actively monitor what I say to Claude?

See "How will UNLV handle the data I submit to Claude?" above. In short: UNLV doesn't proactively monitor conversations, but administrators can access them for legitimate institutional purposes like security and policy enforcement.

Does Anthropic use my conversations to train its models?

No. UNLV's enterprise agreement with Anthropic excludes UNLV data from model training.

What am I not allowed to upload to Claude?

Personally identifiable information (names, contact information, birthdate, salary, NSHE ID, and similar), FERPA-protected student records, protected health information, restricted research data, NDA-covered information, and institutional data of any kind unless it's been anonymized first. See the full AI Best Practices page for more detail.

Can I use Claude for HIPAA-covered work?

UNLV is in the process of finalizing HIPAA configuration for Claude. Until that work is complete, do not submit protected health information (PHI) to Claude in any UNLV environment.

What happens to my data if I leave UNLV, for example after graduating or a job change?

There's currently no automated way to migrate your data once you lose UNLV access. If you have a personal Claude account, you can share conversations and projects to that account using Claude's sharing features, or manually copy over any custom instructions and prompts you want to keep. You can also request that Anthropic delete your data from its archives; see Anthropic's privacy policy for how to submit that request.

Using Claude

Am I required to use Claude?

No. UNLV provides access so the community has it without cost, but there's no requirement to use it. See the Claude AI page for more on UNLV's approach to AI tools.

What can Claude actually help me with?

  • Writing and content: drafting, editing, and refining emails, reports, and course materials
  • Research and analysis: synthesizing documents and surfacing insights across large amounts of material
  • Coding: writing, debugging, and explaining code, one of Claude's core strengths
  • Reasoning: working through complex, multi-step, or ambiguous problems
  • Learning support: adapting to your pace, useful for students or anyone exploring a new topic
  • Organization: summarizing and structuring large amounts of information quickly

See Getting Started with Claude at UNLV for a fuller breakdown.

What are Claude Projects?

Projects are dedicated workspaces where you can upload documents and keep context across multiple conversations, so you're not re-uploading the same materials every time. Available on all three UNLV tiers.

What file types can I upload?

Claude can work with documents, spreadsheets, images, and code files, useful for reviewing papers, datasets, or visual material. Follow the data guidance above before uploading anything sensitive.

Can Claude search the web?

Confirming current configuration for UNLV's environments. Web search is an organization-level setting an admin turns on, so this will vary by tier. This section will be updated once confirmed.

Can I connect Claude to Gmail, Google Drive, or other apps?

Confirming which connectors are approved for UNLV use. Connectors are also an organization-level setting, so availability may differ by tier. This section will be updated once confirmed.

Does Claude remember things about me between conversations?

Not automatically. Projects are the best way to maintain context across sessions. Check your account Settings for any personalization features enabled for your account.
