Beginning September 30, 2024, Google will be disabling Less Secure Apps (LSAs), an antiquated sign-in method that allows users to connect certain apps to their Google Workspace account using their username and password. Learn more about Google's deprecation of this feature on their update blog.
End user action
Most users will not need to take any action as the vast majority of apps use modern authentication, known as Sign in with Google. However, certain apps will need to be reconfigured, or you will need to sign in again to switch to modern authentication.
Outlook 2016 or Earlier
If you are using Outlook 2016 or Earlier, you will need to update your sign in to Sign in with Google.
Option 1: Upgrade Outlook to the latest version
The most recent version of Outlook supports Sign in with Google. UNLV users can receive the latest version of Outlook from the IT Help Desk. Once installed, add your account and Outlook will automatically redirect you.
Option 2: Use Google Workspace Sync for Microsoft Outlook
Alternatively you can use Google Workspace Sync for Microsoft Outlook.
Thunderbird or another email client
Users with Thunderbird
You may need to update Thunderbird to the latest version, then follow these instructions to update your account to use OAuth (Sign in with Google).
Other email clients
If you use another email client except macOS and iOS, verify your account has been configured to use OAuth or Sign in with Google. Check the help documentation for your specific email client. Most accounts can be updated by simply removing and re-adding your account.
macOS, iOS, and iPadOS devices
If you use the Mail, Contacts, or Calendar apps on macOS, iOS, or iPadOS devices, you may need to verify you are using OAuth (Sign in with Google).
Check your device's account settings. If it says "Gmail" or "Google" as the account type, you are good to go.
If you need to set your account up again, follow these instructions from Apple Support to remove and re-add your account
Other Third-Party Applications (Web apps and Servers)
UNLV IT cannot be certain if a third-party application that is connected to your account will be affected. Generally, those that are connected to your account using a simple username and password will be impacted. We recommend contacting the developer of the applications to see if their app will be affected. If it is, they will need to update their applications to support OAuth. For existing connections, they will have until September 30, 2024 to update their applications. You can send the developer this guide on using OAuth 2.0 to access Google APIs. They can also refer to Google's guide on OAuth 2.0 for mobile & desktop apps.
Scanners and Other Devices
For scanners or other devices using simple mail transfer protocol (SMTP) or LSA to send emails, configure to use OAuth or configure an App Password for use with the device. If you replace your device, look for one that sends email using OAuth.
If you still cannot use OAuth (Sign in with Google)
If the application cannot be updated to use OAuth by September 30, 2024, you can configure an App Password for it.
