Dashboard Overview

The Dashboard is the first thing you will see when you log into Canvas. The Dashboard helps you see what is happening in all your current courses.

Opening the Dashboard

You can open the Dashboard by clicking on the tab on the left-hand side of home screen. This will take you to the Dashboard view where you will be able to adjust the layout, change the view, and set your Dashboard favorites. Courses that do not appear on your Dashboard can also be viewed by going to All Courses. Instructors can also see all past courses that they taught. See Viewing Past Courses for more information.

Dashboard Overview

  1. The Dashboard view can be changed by clicking the vertical ellipsis icon  to the right. The view pictured below is the Card View. Reference Dashboard Views for more information.
  2. All announcements in a course can quickly be accessed by clicking the announcement icon  on the desired course card.
  3. All files that are available for viewing in the course can be quickly accessed by clicking the file folder icon  on the desired course card.
  4. To quickly view all the assignments, click on the notepad/pencil icon  on the desired course card.
  5. All the discussions can quickly be viewed by clicking the discussion icon  on the desired course.
  6. Each individual card can be modified by clicking the vertical ellipsis icon  on the desired course card.
  7. Your To Do list can be found to the right of the Dashboard.
  8. Below the To Do list, your future assignments are found under Coming Up.
  9. If any feedback on assignments is given, you will see this under Recent Feedback. You can remove any items from any list by clicking the "X" next to the item.

Note: By default, the current term courses will be shown on your Dashboard unless manually set. See Setting Dashboard Favorites below for more information. Not all courses will have Assignments, Discussions, Announcements, or Files.

Editing a Course Card

Each individual course card can be modified to make your Dashboard more personalized. This can be done by clicking vertical ellipsis icon  in the top right of the desired course card.

  1. The Nickname for the course can be changed by using the text box. This will change the name of the course card that appears on your Dashboard.
    1. The card overlay color can be changed in this view as well in these settings.
    2. This is also the color that will appear in the calendar.
  2. To cancel the changes click the Cancel button
  3. To apply the changes click the Apply button.
  4. The position of the course cards can be changed as well by clicking on Move to Top
  5. ... or Move up
  6. To remove the course card from your Dashboard, click the Unfavorite button.

Changing Dashboard Views

  1. By default the Dashboard is set to Card View, unless previously set manually.
  2. The Dashboard can also be set to List View by clicking on it. This view will show all the activity in all courses as a feed on your Dashboard.
  3. The Recent Activity Dashboard will have all the new notifications in all courses and can be set by clicking on it.
  4. The course card Color Overlay can be toggled on/off by clicking on it. The List View and Recent Activity view examples can be seen below.

Setting Dashboard Favorites

The course cards that appear in the Card View of the Dashboard can be added/removed by clicking on Courses, then clicking on All Courses. Once in the All Courses view, you can favorite or unfavorite courses by clicking the star icons  . If a star is empty , it will not appear on the Dashboard. If the star is filled in , the course will appear on your Dashboard.

Viewing Past Courses

When on the All Courses page, instructors will see their Past Enrollments. These are any courses that were taught by the instructor in previous terms. These courses are able to be accessed by instructors, but will not appear to students. These past courses can be set to appear on your Dashboard as well.
