Panopto Assignments in WebCampus: Student Recording and Submission Guide

Students who need to record and submit multimedia with Panopto can follow these instructions to create, upload, and submit their work.

Is your instructor requiring use of the Panopto lecture capture tool in creating videos for assignments or course requirements? If so, this guide shows you a step-by-step of how to record, upload, and submit assignments (if your instructor has enabled this feature) using Panopto.

Requirements for Recording in Panopto

To record content in Panopto, you will need the following:

  • A desktop or laptop computer running either Windows or macOS
  • High quality microphone with USB connectivity.
    • Some devices and cameras come with built-in microphones, which will work if you are not planning to move around during your presentation.
  • Optionally, a high quality video camera with USB connectivity.
    • If you do not wish to record your face, you have the option of doing an audio-only recording.
  • A stable internet connection to upload your video

University Libraries offers cameras, microphones, and space to record content though their Multimedia Production program. 

Recording Options

Recording with Panopto for Windows or Mac

You will need to download and install Panopto for Windows or Mac, which you can do before your session. After installing Panopto Recorder, you are ready to begin recording,

Recording with Panopto Capture Online Tool

Panopto has another option for recording content, called Panopto Capture. Panopto Capture is browser-based and does not require users to install anything in order to create videos. 

Uploading a Video Not Recorded via Panopto

If you used a professional video editing solution, or have an existing video, you can upload that content to Panopto directly.

Video Editing and Enhancements

Panopto has basic video editing features. Through the Panopto editor, you can:

  • Add and edit captions
  • Hide parts of your video that you do not want viewers to see
  • Include a table of contents
  • Choose which video stream you want your viewers to focus on if you are capturing more than one secondary source, such as a dual computer monitor

Submitting Recording to an Assignment

Once your video has been uploaded and completed processing, you can now submit it to your assignment.

  1. Navigate to your assignment page. If enabled, select Assignments from the left navigation, then select your assignment. If the page is not visible (disabled), check Modules for the submission area.
  2. On the assignment page, select Start Assignment.

  3. In the text entry box, select Panopto. If you do not see it, select More (three dots in a vertical line), then Panopto.

  4. If you already recorded your video and uploaded it to the course assignment folder, it will appear in the Choose menu. If it does not, you may need to switch the Folder Selection (a).
    1. If you have a pre-recorded video, select Upload instead to upload it from your device
    2. If you want to record a fresh video, select Record instead
  5. After you select or record the video, then select Insert.

  6. After your video has been embedded into the text box, select Submit Assignment.

Recording Checklist for Students

For best results on producing your content, we recommend verifying the following:

  • Before Recording
    • With Panopto for Windows or Mac
      • Verified the course folder is correct
      • Selected your proper sources
      • Checked your camera and microphone
      • Selected secondary sources like your screen
      • Closed all windows you do not want to record
    • With Panopto Capture for web
      • Verified the course folder is correct
      • Checked your camera and microphone
      • Selected secondary sources like your screen
      • Closed all windows you do not want to record
         
  • After Recording
    • Added a name and description to the recording
    • Edited your content if you have the ability to do so
    • Properly embedded your video into your assignment
