Utilizing Panopto Capture

Panopto has another option for recording content, called Panopto Capture. Panopto Capture is browser-based and does not require users to install any software in order to create videos. This guide illustrates how to use Panopto Capture to create videos, as well as help you determine if it is the best option for you.

Requirements for Capture

This article assumes you have already setup your WebCampus course to store a Panopto session, or you are a student uploading to an assignment folder.

You must also be using a modern web browser, such as Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge, or Apple Safari

Safari Support

Before recording, verify that third-party cookies are enabled when using Panopto Capture in Safari. For more information, see How to Create a Video in Panopto Using Safari.

Before You Begin

Before recording, because Panopto Capture is browser-based, it is more limited than Panopto for Windows or Mac.

  • The web browser window must remain open until prompted it is safe to close to ensure the video is fully processed
  • There is no pause-and-resume option for video recording with Panopto Capture. Recording can be stopped, and a new recording can be initiated, but recordings cannot be paused and restarted

Quick Start Guide

The steps below illustrate a basic use of Capture.

  1. Go to WebCampus and select the course to record in
  2. In the left navigation, select Panopto Recordings

  8. Once you have finished recording, be sure to keep the tab or window open until prompted it is safe to close

When to use Panopto for Windows or Mac

Panopto Capture is best used when:

  • You do not or cannot install software
  • You have a shorter recording
  • You do not need to record more than yourself and what is on your screen
  • You would like to use Smart Camera to automatically zoom and follow yourself

Panopto Capture should not be used when:

  • You are recording a longer session (one hour or more)
  • You want live previews of your video and audio stream during recording
  • You would like to pause and resume your recording
  • You are recording multiple sources beyond video, audio, and single screen recording
  • You do not want to risk losing your work if the browser is closed before it is safe to do so
