How-to Downgrade a Paid Workspace

Workspace Owners can downgrade a Slack workspace from a paid plan to the Free plan. The change takes effect immediately and changes which features and content are available in the workspace.

Warning: Review the impacts in this article and notify affected members before downgrading. Slack Connect channels disconnect immediately, and guest accounts are deactivated.

Before You Begin

  • You must be a Workspace Owner to change a workspace plan.
  • Confirm that the workspace does not rely on Slack Connect channels, guest accounts, channel email addresses, or Workflow Builder workflows that cannot be interrupted.
  • Let workspace members and any external collaborators know when the change will occur.
  • Review the workspace's messages, files, and installed apps so you understand the Free plan limits that will apply after the downgrade.

Downgrade the Workspace

  1. In Slack on a desktop computer, select the workspace name in the upper-left corner.
  2. Go to Tools & settings > Billing.
  3. On the Overview tab, select Change plan.
  4. Choose Switch immediately to Free plan.
  5. Select Preview Changes.
  6. Review the changes, then select the confirmation checkbox at the bottom of the page.
  7. Select Downgrade Slack.

Slack applies the Free plan immediately.

What Changes After the Downgrade

Area Effect of moving to the Free plan
Messages, files, and apps The Free plan limits for messages, files, and apps are reapplied to the workspace.
Slack Connect Channels shared with people outside the organization disconnect immediately. Each organization keeps its own copy of the channel.
Guest accounts Guest accounts are deactivated. A Workspace Owner can reactivate a guest as a full member, if appropriate.
Channel email addresses Existing channel email addresses stop working, and new channel email addresses cannot be created.
Workflow Builder Existing workflows remain active and count toward the workspace app limit. New workflows cannot be created. Workspace Owners, Workspace Admins, and the members who created workflows can remove existing workflows.
Unused paid-plan time If applicable, Slack credits the workspace account for the unused portion of the paid plan.

After the Downgrade

  • Verify that any required full members can access the workspace.
  • Contact external Slack Connect collaborators to coordinate a new communication method, if needed.
  • Review active workflows and installed apps against the Free plan app limit.
  • Update any process that sends email to a channel email address.
