Setting Up Offline 2-Step Verification for UNLVMail or Rebelmail

ACE Multifactor Authentication has replaced Google 2-Step Verification

When you sign in to your UNLVMail or Rebelmail account, you'll now be prompted to sign in to your ACE Account. ACE Multifactor Authentication will also replace Google's 2-Step Verification for your UNLVMail account. You'll use your MFA methods set up for your ACE Account. If you've signed in with ACE recently, you'll be automatically signed in.

See our Preparing for International Travel article for offline verification.

If you are traveling to an area with low or no cellular coverage, or you would prefer to not receive SMS codes or push notifications for when you sign in to UNLVMail or Rebelmail, you can setup your account to receive codes while your registered phone is offline.

Verification Options

Okta Verify (Recommended)

If you have Okta Verify setup with your ACE Account, you can use the Okta Verify app with your UNLVMail or Rebelmail account for 2-Step Verification. We recommend this option if you already setup Okta Verify.

Before you start, make sure you have setup Okta Verify with your ACE Account first.

Once Okta Verify has been activated for your ACE Account, you can proceed to setup your UNLVMail or Rebelmail account for offline 2-Step Verification.

Google Authenticator

If you prefer, you can also setup the Google Authenticator app. The process and usage is the same as Okta Verify.

Before you begin setup, you must download the Google Authenticator app from the App Store or Google Play.

Setting Up Offline 2-Step Verification

Once you have selected Okta Verify or Google Authenticator and have the app on your device, you must now link the device to your Google Account.

  1. On a desktop or laptop, go to your Google Account.
  2. In the left navigation, select Security.
  3. Under Signing in to Google, select 2-Step Verification. You may need to sign in.
  4. Under Add more second steps to verify it’s you, select Authenticator app.
    • If you already had an Authenticator app before, it will appear under Available second steps. Select this option if it appears.
  5. Select Set up authenticator.
    • If you already had an Authenticator app, select Delete to remove it and set a new one up.
  6. A QR code will appear on screen. Open your phone and continue depending on your chosen app.

  1. You should see a new account with your email and a 6 digit code in the app you selected.
  2. On your computer with the QR code displayed, select Next.
  3. Enter the code displayed from Okta Verify or Google Authenticator for your UNLVMail or Rebelmail account.
  4. Select Verify.

If everything was setup correctly and the code was correct, the screen will automatically clear and Authenticator will display in your Step list. You may now close the Google Account page.

Signing in with Offline 2-Step Verification

When you need to sign in with your UNLVMail or Rebelmail account with 2-Step Verification and your cell phone cannot receive the 2-Step code via prompt or SMS, you will use offline 2-Step to complete your sign in.

  1. Go to any UNLVMail or Rebelmail service, such as Gmail (mail.google.com).
  2. Sign in with your email and ACE password.
  3. On the 2-Step Verification screen, select Try another way.
  4. Select Get a verification code from the Google Authenticator app (this includes Okta Verify).
  5. Open Okta Verify or Google Authenticator, then locate your email and the 6 digit code displayed for your account.
  6. Enter the 6 digit code from your app into the sign in and select Next.

If the code is correct, sign in will complete automatically.
