Zoom offers the ability to record sessions to refer to later. Zoom afters multiple ways to record and save for future use.
Before you record your sessions
Recording sessions when recording with Zoom should be transparant. Let participants know that the session is being recorded. Zoom will also display banners, icons, and announce to the group the session is being recorded.
If students are present for a recorded session, recording of students is considered an education record under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, also known as FERPA. As a result, recordings may not be disclosed outside of your class roster.

Cloud Recording
Starting a Recording
OIT recommends recording to the cloud as it is the easiest way to record a meeting. Additionally, recordings that encounter processing errors may be recoverable if they were recorded to the cloud. UNLV Zoom users have 5 gigabytes (GB) of storage in the Zoom cloud. Recordings stored here will be permanently deleted after 270 days.
OIT recommends that you move any important or essential non-HIPAA compliant recorded files from Zoom and save to another location, like
Panopto, or Google Drive.
Cloud recordings may take up to 24 hours to process and be available for viewing in the cloud. Typical processing time is approximately two times the duration of the recorded session. (For example, an hour-long session may take about two hours to process.)
- In your meeting controls, select Record
- Select Record to the Cloud
- Everyone in the meeting will get a pop-up that indicates the meeting is now being recorded
- While the meeting is recording, you can select to Pause or Stop Recording
- If you select Stop, you will get a pop-up asking whether you wish to stop the recording. If you select Yes, then the recording will begin processing in the cloud
Accessing your Recording
- Log in to Zoom web
- Select My Account
- In the left navigation, select Recordings
- In the Cloud Recordings tab, there will be a list of your recordings, including their Topic, ID, Start Time, File Size, and how many days until they auto-delete
- Hover over the recording and open the menu to the right to download or delete the recording
- By clicking the Topic of the recording, you will be taken to a page where you can stream the recording online, as well as see more information about it
Local Recording
Starting a Recording
Recording allows you to record your meeting to your local hard drive. Recording quality will vary based on processing power, RAM, and other factors relating to your computer’s specifications. You may notice issues with pixelation and fluidity of motion if your computer is not built with optimized processing power/RAM.
Neither Zoom or OIT can provide support for locally recorded Zoom meetings, including if recordings are corrupted or otherwise damaged.
- On the Zoom menu bar, select Record
- Select Record to this Computer
- Everyone in the meeting will get a pop-up that indicates the meeting is now being recorded
- While the meeting is recording, you can select to Pause or Stop Recording
- If you select Stop, you may resume the meeting as normal. There will be no pop-up confirmation
- Once the meeting ends, there will be a pop-up indicating that the recording is processing and being converted
- Once it finishes processing, the folder where the recording files are stored will automatically open
Accessing your Recording
After you end the meeting and the recording successfully processes, the file containing your recording will open automatically.
However, you can also access the file path (local location) by doing the following:
- Log in to Zoom web
- Select My Account
- In the left navigation, select Recordings
- Select Local Recordings
- Zoom will list where the video was saved to at the time it was recorded with Zoom. If you have moved the recording since, the correct path may not be shown.
