Softphone (Webex Calling/Cisco Jabber)

Limited Support

The IT Help Desk is able to assist customers with installing or signing in to Jabber. However, you must contact Telecom to request a Jabber account.

Softphones are provided by Webex Calling and Cisco Jabber. These allow customers to take phone calls from their campus phone extensions from a remote location. You can request the service by submitting a service request with the Telecommunications department. Once a license has been purchased through Telecommunications, they will reach out to you with further information about how to access and install the software. If you need assistance with installing Webex or Jabber, you can contact the IT Help Desk.

Now you can use Webex as your virtual extension!

Telecom has enabled Cisco Webex Calling as a modern alternative to Cisco Jabber. Upgraded features include:

  • Improved call quality
  • Integration with Google Calendar
  • Improved installation experience
  • Automatic application updates
  • In-call screen sharing with other Webex App users

All extensions that were enabled for Jabber can also use Webex Calling. Both applications can be installed on the same device, however only one can actively receive calls. Webex and Jabber will notify you if another app/device is signed in and offer to switch to the current app/device.

For more information, see Telecom's Webex page.

Requesting Softphone

Softphones will support multiple devices, such as both a desk phone, computer, and mobile device. Virtual Extensions requires at least one of these devices:

  • Windows or macOS device with speakers and microphone (headset recommended)
  • iOS or Android device compatible with Webex or Cisco Jabber

Devices must have a high-quality Internet connection. VPN is not required.

You will need to request an extension though Telecom first. You can request this by contacting your department's administrative assistant, or by submitting a request to Telecom directly.

Installing and signing in

Once your extension is created/updated, you can find installers on Telecom's website.

You'll use your UNLVMail address when prompted for your email, then sign in with your ACE Account.

Shared Extensions

Departments with shared extensions, such as common phone numbers answered by multiple users, are supported. You will need to submit a request to Telecom to have the shared extensions assigned to users.
