Using RebelFlex Classrooms

RebelFlex is a hybrid instruction style where UNLV students can select to attend class either in person or remotely. This style of instruction usually requires the use of lecture capture (Panopto) and web conferencing (Zoom) tools to accommodate both remote and in-person learners and interaction. RebelFlex rooms are specifically equipped with cameras, microphones, and speakers designed to accommodate both in-person and online students.

RebelFlex rooms can be requested via the Registrar during the course scheduling process. Many RebelFlex instructors opt to record their sessions via the Panopto equipment, and the Office of Information Technology (OIT) can schedule one or more of your class sessions to be recorded automatically.

For more information on how to use the classroom technology to teach in the RebelFlex style of instruction, please contact Classroom Technology Services to schedule training.

What is a RebelFlex Room?

RebelFlex rooms are equipped with one or two special ceiling panels (look for the crisscross design and green lights) that contain highly sensitive microphones. In addition to these tiles, RebelFlex rooms are also equipped with Panopto lecture capture equipment.

What Makes a RebelFlex Room Different?

In regular classrooms or classrooms that contain Panopto lecture capture equipment, instructors would normally have to bring their own equipment (like a separate device) or request a camera and microphone to temporarily modify the lectern PC in order to support a synchronous web-conference. RebelFlex rooms do not require instructors to obtain extra equipment. These rooms are already equipped with technology that support instructors who teach two sets of students at once; students who are in the classroom with the instructor, and those who join online via a web-conferencing application such as Zoom.

Hosting Live Zoom Sessions in a RebelFlex Room

Room audio will be heard by virtual attendees

The only difference between a RebelFlex Classroom and other classrooms are the addition of room-wide microphones. These devices are able to pick up audio from most of the room, including the audience. These microphones are very sensitive and can potentially pickup whispering from the audience.

Please remind in-person attendees that room audio can be heard via Zoom, including low voices.

To ensure you, the instructor, are heard, please wear the lavalier microphone during the session.

To host a live Zoom session within a RebelFlex classroom:

  1. On the UNLV Zoom website, select Download Zoom App
NOTE: You will have to complete this step each time you have a class, as lectern PCs revert to their default stage after you log out
  2. Login to the Zoom app when it finishes downloading
  3. You can start the meeting one of two ways:
    1. If you scheduled your Zoom meeting through the WebCampus Integration, start the meeting via the Zoom tab in your course
    2. If you scheduled it via your Zoom account, start it through the app

Once the meeting has been launched, controls available are the same as a standard Zoom meeting.

Recording Sessions

Recording sessions in a RebelFlex room is the same as recording sessions as any other Classroom with Integrated Recording Equipment.

Room Audio can be Recorded

The only difference between a RebelFlex Classroom and other classrooms are the addition of room-wide microphones. These devices are able to pick up audio from most of the room, including the audience.

Because the audience will be recorded during a Panopto session in a RebelFlex room, please review Panopto Guidelines: FERPA, IP, Accessibility, and Responsible Use regarding required consent from participants.

Please remind in-person attendees that room audio can be heard and will be recorded, including low voices.

To ensure you, the instructor, are heard, please wear the lavalier microphone during the session.
